2022 Ontario Open in Retrospect

Updated: May 10, 2022

I'm so blessed to be a teacher to a group of talented and hard working people.

First to congratulate is Ariel. It's her first big tournament and she performed amazingly well. She scored her first win and lost to better girl in her division. Congrats Ariel and we are proud of you getting a Silver Medal.

Next is Yuki. Despite being a mom with a stressful career and some injuries sustained in training, she manages to put in the time to drill, roll and compete. She fought in the adults division where she was winning but got stuck in a bad position where she didn't relent and fought throughout the match. Congrats Yuki for your Silver Medal.

Coach Joseph had an amazing performance in his division and his first match in Absolute. All wins were done in spectacular fashion by submissions earning him the 2022 Ontario Open Champion with a Gold Medal performance. This unlocked a new level for our coach as he was awarded the rank of Faxia Roxas (Purple Belt) on the podium. All of us are blessed to have a dedicated BJJ coach and practitioner at Vaughan Jiu-jitsu Academy.

Eric made his debut in the White Belt Rooster division where he dominated his opponents. He was able to execute his game and was able to escape bad positions in his first match. At the finals, he secured a deep triangle earning him the 2022 Ontario Open Champion for his division. Congratulations on your Gold Medal.

The MVP goes to Nicholas "Kaiju" as he made his debut. Nick had 5 battles at the Medium Heavy division where he sustained multiple abuses from his opponents. At his 3rd match, he was slammed hard but still mustered to continue fighting. He fought 2 more matches where he won the 4th on points and then lost in the finals. Congrats Nick "Kaiju" for being 2nd among 24 competitors earning him a Silver Medal.

I thank all the students of Vaughan Jiu-jitsu Academy who helped them train by being a great training partner. We had 5 competitors who put Vaughan Jiu-Jitsu Academy and Team Bo4 on the BJJ landscape within Canada and as a martial art teacher, I couldn't be more proud of all of you for the sacrifices and dedications you made.

OSS,

Professor Aviado
